Carven

Petite powerhouse Carmen de Tommaso—better known as Madame Carven—stitched her Parisian fashion house into existence in 1945. Tired of towering couture that ignored short queens like herself (at a mere 5'1"), she crafted feminine frocks for the "little woman," blending elegance with everyday sass. Her signature green-and-white stripes became a wardrobe staple, while the 1946 launch of Ma Griffe perfume clawed its way into hearts worldwide. Scarves fluttered in '55, junior lines followed, and by the '70s, Carven was jet-setting with airline uniforms. Though she retired in '93, the brand's been revived like a cat with nine lives—latest under Louise Trotter in 2023. Timeless, witty, and wonderfully wearable: that's Carven's thread.

I did it for the youngsters that came to see me, to teach them how to dress, to give them confidence in their own beauty.
